Whether you have mastered golf or are a seasonal player, you must know the importance of a good warm-up. But, are you familiar with the right exercises to include in your pre-game routine? If not, we have listed down the top 5 exercises not to miss out during your golf warm up session.
Why is Golf Warm Up Important?
Warming up your body, regardless of the sport, is extremely important.
A good warm-up session includes a combination of exercises that target specific muscles and body movement for a better show. It can ultimately help you perform well and score better.
Golf warmup sessions can last over 7-15 minutes depending on your own preference.
Don’t Miss Out On The Following Exercises!
In this section, we have explained a few exercises you must include in your upcoming golf warm-up session!
- Body Weight Squats
Hold the golf club on both its ends, using both hands. Stand tall with your feet shoulder width apart. Once you are in this position, lower your hips similar to a squat.
This will look like you are going to sit on an imaginary chair – keeping your upper body tall and hands still upright. While doing so, make sure your knees do not buckle up.
Do 10 reps! - Toe Touches
This is one of the most nostalgic and effective warmup exercises where you are standing upright and reaching your toes, while extending the spine. This will help you use your mid-back instead of the lower back – which is essentially the goal of this exercise.
If you are rounding your hips, buckling your knees or tucking your hips – this is not considered as a proper hip hinge.
You can practice breathing to get a deeper stretch. Inhale while you are standing and exhale on your way down. - Front and Reverse Lunges
This full course exercise helps activate the core and lower body. Ultimately helping in mobility, stability and strength.
In order to start, make sure you are standing with your feet hip-width apart. Hold the club using both hands, shoulders apart.- For Forward Lunges: Step forward into a lunge position, ensuring your front knee forms a 90-degree angle, and your back knee hovers just above the ground. As you hold a resistance band in front of you, twist your torso toward the side of your forward leg, keeping your arms extended.
- For Reverse Lunges: Step backward into a reverse lunge, lowering your back knee until it almost touches the ground while keeping your front knee at a 90-degree angle. Hold a resistance band in front of you with your arms extended, and twist your torso toward the side of your front leg. 7-10 reps is a good number to repeat this exercise.
- Speed Swings
Hold your driver and stand in your golf stance. Without a ball, swing quickly 10 times to the left, pausing to reset after each swing.
Then, switch your grip and swing quickly 10 times to the right. This helps you build speed and get your blood flowing before your round.
Final Words
Stepping into the golf course can be a bit overwhelming, especially when you are out of practice or simply not in the mood. In order to get into the right headspace for your golf game, warm-up sessions are crucial. Make sure to include basic exercises like body weight squats, toe touches, lunges and speed swings to get in motion.
